Starting a career in care can lead to many different career opportunities. Jennifer Donaldson started her career as a Care Assistant and now, seven years later, is Mobilisation Project Lead at CRG Homecare. As part of her role, Jennifer works within the Mobilisation Support Team (MST) to set up new CRG Homecare contracts nationwide.
Jennifer wanted to be a nurse but once she started her A Levels, she wanted to earn money and so started a career in care to get hands-on experience in the sector as well as earn.
It wasn’t long after Jennifer became a Care Assistant that she was offered to take on more responsibility and took on the role as Field Care Supervisor.
Jennifer explained: “Before I became a care worker I didn’t know what positions were available to me, I cared for a year in the community and my coordinator approached me and asked if I wanted to take on more responsibility and carry out assessments and write care plans.
“Each one of our service users have a care plan so the Care Assistants know what care and support they need to provide at each call. I carried out an assessment on each service user to establish their health needs and what support they need to have quality of life.”
After two years of being a Field Care Supervisor, Jennifer then progressed into the role of a Care Coordinator. In a Coordinator’s role, Jennifer was completing rotas and supervised the carers who provided end-of-life care.
It was during this time that the care provider Jennifer worked for was acquired by CRG Homecare. Jennifer used the skills from all three roles: Care Assistant, Field Care Supervisor and Care Coordinator to assist with the mobilisation and completed more than 100 service user assessments.
She said: “I was involved in the mobilisation of the contract and the transfer of care to CRG Homecare – it was a lot of early mornings and late nights! I loved mobilisation and, to be honest, the pressure of it. After the Rotherham contract was transferred an opportunity came up in the MST, so I went for it.”
Jennifer has now been part of MST for four years and has been promoted to Mobilisation Project Lead and oversees all homecare mobilisations. “I’d like to think because I have been in different positions that I understand all angles of mobilisation. In MST a large part of the role is speaking to the service users and care workers that are transferring to CRG Homecare. They like the fact I have been a care worker; they feel reassured that I understand how they feel.”
Jennifer added: “I think the Power of Care to me is knowing that we make a difference. There’s a lot of people we need to support in different ways, so they can live in their homes which is so satisfying and important.”
