Working in the Health & Social Care sector can lead to many career opportunities.
Quality Assurance & Training Lead at CRG Homecare, Cheryl Douglas has worked in the sector for more than 16 years and has progressed into different roles.
Cheryl studied a BTEC Level 3 in Health & Social Care at college, as she wanted to work with children. Once she completed her college course, Cheryl worked as a play leader at an after school and holiday club before going to university to study children’s nursing.
After starting a family, Cheryl decided to take her first role in Adult Health & Social Care by working as a PA for a gentleman with Parkinson’s. She then moved onto working as a Care Worker, in a nursing home, before joining CRG in 2004.
Cheryl worked in the CRG’s Healthcare division as a Recruitment Consultant placing qualified and non-qualified professionals in hospital and nursing home settings. During her time in recruitment she was also responsible for the compliance and ensured the company followed safe practices when recruiting.
“I always knew I wanted to work in care in some capacity. I have been at CRG Homecare for 16 years this year and have had several different roles during my time here. After I worked in the recruitment and compliance team I qualified as a Healthcare Trainer and joined CRG Homecare’s Quality & Training Team,” said Cheryl.
Cheryl worked as a trainer delivering Care Certificate training to CRG Homecare’s Care Assistants whilst completing a qualification award in education. She was then promoted to Training & QA Lead and it was in this role she also completed her Level 5 NVQ in Leadership & Management in the Health & Social Care sector. In her current role, Cheryl is responsible for overseeing CRG Homecare’s trainers and quality auditors.
Cheryl commented: “I really enjoy my role within the Quality Assurance Team; no two days are the same. It can sometimes mean long hours and working very fast paced but I enjoy the challenges it brings.
“My role is to guide and support homecare branches to develop and succeed in providing well led, safe, effective and responsive care to vulnerable people. I work together with managers to achieve results and strive for excellence.”
Despite taking more of an office-based role and overseeing a team of people Cheryl still has the opportunity to deliver care, which she thinks is very important. She explained: “I get a chance from time to time to provide some hands-on care, it’s so important to remain true to who you are and give something back.”
Having started in her profession in children’s services, Cheryl’s career highlights the different pathways you can take in the Health & Social Care sector.
Cheryl added: “The best thing about my role and working in care is that you make a difference, you see a smile on a person’s face and know that you made their day. It might not happen every day but when it does it’s so rewarding to know that you did something good and made a difference to someone’s life.
“I would say to anyone thinking about working in care if you’re truly passionate about other people’s well-being, want to make a difference and feel rewarded for what you do go for it but be prepared to work hard!”
